If you’re a content creator or an inspiring influence, you’re probably already posting consistently on Instagram.
The popular social media app now has one billion active users and it’s the number one place for influencer marketing. Businesses now use Instagram to promote their products through digital marketing campaigns, and one of the most effective ways to do this is by hiring influencers to create content for them.
Whether your end goal is to become a full-time content creator or you work with brands as an influencer, taking great Instagram photos is key to your success. Even if you don’t aim to turn Instagram into a job, you might just enjoy content creation, and love getting the perfect images for your feed.
The real question is, how can you take the perfect photo for Instagram? If you’ve been asking yourself this question, you’ve come to the right place!
Here are some key steps to take when you want to get the perfect Instagram image.

It’s easy to forget about the background of your images. However, the background in your photos is just as important as the foreground.
Even if you do have a main focal point of the image, whether that’s you or something else, you shouldn’t forget about the rest of the photo. Your followers can see every pixel of the image!
Try and find locations that have eye-catching backgrounds if you are taking photos outside. If you are inside and want to keep your photos simple and minimalistic, find a white or neutral colored wall to stand against.
If after taking a great photo, can you spot an unwanted object in the background, use a free background remover to remove them.
When using a DSLR camera, you will be able to adjust the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO settings. Each of these components contributes to the exposure of your images.
By choosing the right aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, you can keep your photos bright, but not too bright. You can edit exposure post-production using editing software. However, if your images are very overexposed, there will be very little that you can do about it so it’s best to get it right during the photoshoot!
The best thing to do to avoid over-exposure when you are taking photos is to reduce the ISO to 100 and switch to a fast shutter speed. From here, you can slightly adjust the settings until you find the perfect combination.
Currently, the Instagram feed crops photos to square posts with the dimensions of 1080 x 1080px in a 1:1 aspect ratio.
Taking photos that are too long or wide can impact the way they look on the Instagram feed and may distort your photo or cause somebody’s head to get cropped out! When taking your images for Instagram, avoid using portrait mode and keep the focal points in the center of the shots.
